I recently came across this post by The Bloggess. She's an uber famous blogger, perhaps the funniest person ever and also very real. She doesn't fake it. When things are bad, they're bad.

I'm not like that. I fake it. I try very hard to pretend or to find ways to cope, which aren't always healthy or sane or popular amongst people around me.

I wrote this post a few years back "coming out" about my issues and received a plethora of support from friends and family. It overwhelmed me and made me feel like I honestly am not alone in this extremely hard to understand battle of emotions. If you don't have it.......I'm thrilled for you. But, I also have a hard time explaining exactly what it feels like.

I recall reading Dooce's blog eons ago and have always been struck with one single sentence that she wrote.....something about.....sitting on the edge of her bed, wringing her hands, wondering how she would make it through the next 5 minutes.

I totally get that. I have felt like that many times. It started in my teen years and happens to me randomly, even on medication. I guess this is just part of the condition.

Disease? Illness? Whatever the proper term may be.

The complicated part comes in when I think about all that I have been blessed with and wrapping my head around the reality that I still suffer, despite that. I feel like a spoiled brat. It creates a cycle of self-hate because on paper, my life looks pretty good. So, why can't I just "be happy"?

One of my dearest friends and I often talk about "choosing happiness". I used to be a lot better about that than I am today. I would wake and visit with her in the morning and tell her that I was going to have a good day, regardless of what my internal struggles were.......despite what my crazy head was spinning through.

I have good days, but at 37 years old, still feel like I'm learning how to cope with the bad. My medication helps (Zoloft, if you're curious). Staying busy does, too. My husband is remarkably patient with me, often at my worst......and my 3 wonderful children are hopefully still simply under the assumption that 'mom likes to nap a lot'.

My reason for writing this today? Nothing in particular. Perhaps I just wanted to remind you all that behind this pretty picture that I draw a few days each week on the internet lies an intense struggle of depression and anxiety. And, if you ever think you may be feeling something similar, don't hesitate to get help.

Spring is out and Summer is in.

Just a week or so left of school.......then Lainey's big dance recital (Pray for her.)......and then we're done with schedules!

Did some outdoor decorating.......banners are becoming a constant change up on the patio.

New lanterns over the seating area.

Filled the bottom with sand from the beach to keep the candles in place.

I can't resist anything nautical these days.

Sunday took us to the beach. Carter got 2 new wet suits. Love this one.

So sweet when they're not trying to kill each other.

Meow Meow joined us. She has a swim suit on.

Nap time. Love those piggies.

Silly Laine kept Lamby in view while she rested.

For real? Time is flying.

You can read my 10 year post here. I'm just too damn tired to do another for 12.

Just add us moving to California and doing about 4,314 other things to that list and we'll be up to date.

I thank God every day that he chose me to be your wife.

And, I thank him, too, for these little punks we have the pleasure of spending our days with.

So far, I think we have not totally screwed it all up.

Time will tell.

Where In The World Is The Starnes Family?

We have been busy. Teacher appreciation week, Pa's visit, I was sick, etc, etc. It's a crazy time of year!

As always, we loved seeing Pa. Here he is painting Lainey's nails. He was so intimidated by it............would have preferred to send her to a salon.......but he figured it out.

I missed most of Pa's visit due to being ill. (Tonsilitis.........totally awful........5 days of fever and the back of my throat looked like some moldy science project).

While I was in bed almost dying (felt close, people), Blake and Pa took the kids to Belmont Park at Mission Bay.

The boys climbed some sort of structure that would have given me a heart attack. Thank goodness I wasn't there.

See why? That's my barely 6 year old up there. Yes, he had a very secure harness on, but STILL. I would have been a wreck witnessing this.

Carter had no fear.

Little Laine opted out. Thank goodness.

Little ones LOVE this ride. They loved it the last time we were there.

Pa left town and life resumed to normal.

We had friends over for dinner on Friday.......lovely weather and good company. Can't beat it.

This is Sierra, Kate's daughter.

We busted out the bounce house. Yall, we have had this for nearly 10 years. Have brought it out for countless parties, crawfish boils, etc, etc.

Such an awesome thing for kids.

Mike topped his hot dog with a cream cheese based dip and baked beans. Awesome.

Kate and family joined us. Love smiley David.

These two have been friends since Ainsley was a newborn. Lots of fun ahead!

Totally random, but I found another use for an over-the-door shoe rack. Swim suits! And, sunscreen at the top. Totally convenient.

Blake has turned the garage into his own private office. Carter has joined him and coined it the "man cave."

I'm not allowed in there except to do laundry and clean the litter box.

Excellent.

Saturday night took us to the Davidge house. We hired a sitter (actually 2) and took off.

Roller Derby!

Like the movie, Whip It.

It was a ton of fun. Afterwards, we browsed at some grocery store that was completely foreign to me. I did learn that chicken hands are quite inexpensive. Might add them to my rotation.

After shopping for Asian delicacies, we had a few drinks at the Roller Derby after party.

Been busy, folks.

School is winding down and with that comes a lot of work.

Headed to Disneyland with the Davidge family next week for a little 2 day getaway.

Summer is right around the corner. I'm so ready! No homework, no lunches to pack, no huge projects. Just lazy days. It can't come quick enough.

I think that's about it for now.

Oh, Blake got the new Iphone S or whatever it's called. Carter now spends most of his free time asking it questions. Totally annoying.

*Blake and I celebrate 12 years of marriage!

What to do on Mother's Day?

We almost always celebrate with a picnic. Started this on my first Mother's Day 12 years ago and don't think we've missed one since. Our favorites were with the Griffin family......dear friends from the neighborhood where we built our first house. We'd always meet up at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens.....so beautiful.....the men could play ball and the girls would visit. And, I don't think we ever stopped smiling.

Not sure what tomorrow brings. I'm super sick and have been in bed for several days. I've missed much of Pa's visit, which makes me sad, of course. Right now, the crew is out at Belmont Park, enjoying the rides with an ocean and bay view.

It has been great to have him here. He automatically takes the kids and spoils them rotten. When Jack had his bike stolen on his birthday, he asked Blake for his phone so he could call Pa. And, as expected.......Jack was promised a bike when he came in town. Lainey got one, too. (We covered most of the cost for Lainey's, but still.)

Carter asked for books. I love that kid.

I got up and out of bed for a few hours today to enjoy the patio with Pa and Blake and the occasional rotating kid. We talked and talked about family and kids and life and how short it is. I love Pa.

I bought an inexpensive kit at Walmart to make the circles (usually used for cupcake toppers) into labels for the Bigfoot Hunter water bottles. They weren't perfect and as neat as the stickers, but they worked!

The labels will coordinate with many of the ideas on my Pinterest board. You can certainly make your own....I've done that, too......but do love a printed label. Most sellers (there are so many more than the two I listed above) will do custom work....you just have to contact them to ask!

Stuff I Am Learning While Sick

I watched 12 hours of Bravo yesterday.

My brain started melting, so I switched over to the DVR.

I also read half a book.

See? Being sick isn't even relaxing for me.

And, with that, I will share my recent discoveries:

1. Kathy's new show is OK. Not great and a little too intended to shock people. But, I did laugh a few times.

2. I love Andy Cohen. Yes, I'm jumping on the band wagon. It seems like he just appeared out of nowhere, but I think I've been watching him for a long time.

3. I might have hallucinated due to my fever last night. Blake dragged the laundry basket into the living room (swoon, ladies) to fold some clothes before bed and I called him shortly after to see if there was a snake on the ground. Thought the sound of the basket crossing the floor was a snake who slithered in our wall length window we keep open for air. It wasn't a snake.

4. Caught up on Suburgatory. Love that show. And, they added Alicia Silverstone? Excellent.

5. Watched the Disneyland version of Modern Family. Pretty good, although, the teens got Corn Dogs in Fantasy Land in a matter of minutes. First, everyone knows the only Corn Dog station is at the front of Main Street. And, second, the line is always 20 people long. Worth the wait, yes. But, they couldn't have accomplished such purchase in that amount of time. Pretty much ruined the whole show for me. I did love that that the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique was mentioned twice and shown, too. Best value on site.

6. I can't wait to see the new Sacha Baron Cohen movie. So wrong.

7. Bachelorette starts Monday! Yay, Emily!

"I'd rather be alone than wishin' I was alone."

7. Pa is in town and he was going to take the kids so Blake and I could go to a party WITHOUT CHILDREN on Coronado Island tonight. Sad we can't go now.

8. I love the movie, Moneyball.

9. I think I watched Don't be Tardy for the Wedding in and out of sleep for about 4 hours last night. This was pre-antibiotics, so fear not. My head is straight on again.

10. Love this. I didn't do that, but I am Mom Enough.

11. Love this, too. Conservative friends, let me have it.

12. Finally, if you are just now reading the Fifty Shades of Grey series and do not read on a normal basis, you are a total perv. Everyone knows the pretense of them. We ritualistic readers get a pass and are not considered pervs because of this. It was just another series to us. That I read in 5 days.

Oh, you want to know my vote for who to play Christian in the upcoming movie series?

No, not that vampire dude.

Who should play Ana? Who cares?

13. Overboard just came on. My day just got better.

Lots of Scoop - What a Weekend

Mike returned from 7 months in Afghanistan and across the globe. Thank God for his service and for the United States Marine Corps! It was awesome to see the reunions........reminded me a lot of my little brother's deployment to Iraq eons ago.

Seeing the kids re-unite with Daddy brought tears. It was awesome.

Holly had her crew decked out in Kelly's Kids apparel. I will be buying one of those monogrammed sashes for Laine. How precious?!

We were there early in the morning, so the anthem began and then the USMC song. So moving.

So happy to see the family back together!

Kids made signs and were all ready for his return.

He's the third bus in.........so wonderful to see these guys return safely to the United States.

I'm out of order today, so please be patient.

We rode the train to Old Town on Saturday to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Beautiful weather and San Diego. Can't beat it. Put a blanket down in the parade grounds and let the kids play hacky sack and run like wild.

Me: "Kids, line up for a picture."

Carter: "Really, mom? We LIVE HERE!"

Quiet down, son.

Love the train ride. Drinks are permitted. Beautiful views of the Pacific.

It was unusually crowded due to Cinco de Mayo AND a Padres game.

Pretty wild bunch.

Friday night brought us to Carter's school for their last production as 5th graders......a musical called "Go West".

Here is Carter with his good friend, Christian, and little ones.

Pre-production and with his current favorite book. Besides Hunger Games, of course.

OK, so the day of the play brought me north to the Long Beach marina to visit with bloggie friends.

They were on their annual trip and I busted up the party.

My goal was to see these two:

Jenny Kate's Spot

They were just as I had expected. Loved them.

Met lots of other great girls, too. I love blogging.

Finally, this may be my most favorite piece yet. I put it on MLS's Facebook page if you're interested. Simple and sweet. Makes me smile.

Pa is in town this week and we're elated about that!

Blake recently mentioned that he wants to take the kids to Europe within in the next 5 years.

Think Griswolds. I know we can do it. Kids will be of perfect age........9, 11, and 16. Too early to start planning?

Leg warmers in the sand. Who knew?

We flew a very large kite on one of our recent beach visits.

Kite flying is hard work.

Carter prefers to relax and not really concern himself with if it is going to fall on a family of 4 sitting behind us.

Jack received this seersucker blazer from Diane, one of Caroline's good friends.

Promise he loves it. It's people he doesn't care for.

Every morning, we go through this routine. Lainey lays out 3-4 outfits and we peruse our options.

She is such a girl.

Fire pit at the neighbor's recently.

We're so lucky to have such great people close to us.

Jack learned to shot gun a soda recently.

His words:

Hey, wook, Mom. I bighted da side of da can and it comes out way faster. Waine can do it, too.

LSU fraternities, line up.

A few people asked how we made our Bigfoot prints.

It was the usual flour (2 cups), salt (1 cup) and water (1 cup). This can be used for all sorts of activities.....hand prints, Christmas ornaments, and more.

Cook at 200 degrees for approximately 2 hours, depending on the size of your shapes.

Got snails?

They're winning the war.

Jack received 2 of these dino shirts from Pa and Mae Mae for his birthday. Love them. When he puts his arms together, they turn into the bite of whatever dinosaur is on his shirt.

See it? Chomp. Chomp.

These people live down the street from us.

Even though we have no interest in buying a house anytime soon (or ever again if the market doesn't improve), I will be all over this one when/if it goes on the market.

Can you imagine this drive in each day?

These flowers are all over southern California right now. They grow wildly on the side of the highways. It looks like pink snow.....almost blinding in some areas.

Have I mentioned how much I love San Diego lately?

One more thing. I'm officially that mom that I never said I would be.

Look what Lainey is wearing. I'm all about mis-match, but this is a big FAIL.

Bigfoot Party

The party was a success. Who knew Big Foot had no many opportunities?

The cake was delicious, but hideous. I found a "yeti" toy to add to it, but my writing proved less than successful.

Lots of friends, new and old.

Kids grabbed Bigfoot hunting water to set out in search of him.

Also, magnifying glasses. Once they found their print (the flour/salt/water combo commonly used for hand prints.......cut out into Bigfoot shapes), they were awarded with an official Bigfoot Hunter's License.

There were Bigfoot crafts.........where kids dressed up Bigfoot in either pajamas or a tropical shirt. We live in California, folks. It makes sense.

The hunt was on.

Cake time! Our dapper little guy was thrilled.

Things That Are Bothering Me

I really could write this list on a daily basis, but I spare you so as not to lose my readership (all 4 of you).

The following things are annoying me.

1. People who don't put their toilet lids down. A toilet seat should only ever be up when in use. Period.

2. People who think that a Kindergartner wearing a bow tie is ridiculous. Don't worry about it.

3. Small children who take 30 minutes changing out of their pajamas and into school clothes.

4. Pretty much anyone who is in the store, anywhere near me, while I'm shopping at Walmart.

5. Said people - of Walmart - who haggle over pricing and stall my line. Everyone knows that their prices are always screwed up. Just grab the crap you need and hope for the best.

6. Walmart, in general.

7. Kindergartners who have homework - approximately 4 pages plus 2 reading assignments - every day of the week, including weekends. And, major holidays including Easter & Christmas.

8. Bloggers who take this whole blogging thing too seriously.

9. The price of gas in California.

10. Crazy couponers. This disgust is not so much driven by negativity, but instead jealousy. Walking away with $200 worth of groceries for $9 is AWESOME. I just wonder if they actually find the time to eat or use what they buy. I picture them in a dark basement with a basket of scissors madly snipping away, all the while, kids are upstairs eat Ho Hos and drinking Red Bull (because it was on sale, of course).

11. Inappropriate bumper stickers. Why? Really, people, why? Explaining such to a curious 11 year old is not fun.

12. All the blogger books out these days. Matt Logelin and Nie Nie? Love. The rest? No fanks. Either way, I did not see my book on the shelves of Target. Yes, that is because it hasn't been written. Maybe I should stop typing out this pointless drivel and get started. My memoir is going to make The Glass Castle look like a candy coated, music filled, Mary Poppins themed walk in the park.

13. The fact that I still miss Batman. And, that I refer to Finn as Batman constantly.

14. The state of California. $320 + driving school = ticket obsolete. I'd think twice before crossing that line to get into the turn lane, folks.

I think that's enough for now!

I've got to help Jack finish reading War & Peace before school.

Pretty random today.

Mrs. Becca, the little punks' former preschool teacher, had a bebe recently.

Oh, she's so, so tiny.

8 pounds here. She's 3 weeks old. Her name is Bay. Love that.

McNamara girls joined us for a visit and to snuggle with Bay.

Mrs. Becca was Lainey, Jack and Rylee's first teacher. Big part of their lives! We will always remember her.

Little punkin has to wear the harness due to her position while being breech. Might be off soon......or later......time will tell.

Carter adored her, as he does all babies. I've never seen an 11 year old boy with such a love for little ones. He has such a big heart.

You know Lainey loved her. It was such a fun visit. Hoping to have them back next week for dinner. I failed to get a picture of Ricky.......Becca's husband......they are the cutest couple.

Been meaning to post about the crayon art we did a few weeks ago. From Pinterest, of course.

A few tips:

Wear an old shirt/pants. The wax splatters.

Cover the ground or table under you. It's messier than you'd think.

Cheaper crayons seemed to work better than Crayola.

We used tacky glue to attach the crayons to flat canvas and then a hair dryer to melt the wax. This is one of the 3 pieces we created. Lots of fun and way easier than I had anticipated!

I recently went through the house to remove the children's artwork that they so graciously adorn our walls with.

I simply can't take this one down, though. Look at all the effort he put into the train and then attached his photo in the "conductor's" seat.

I love that kid.

Things have been stressful around the Starnes casa lately. More on that eventually.

My sweet neighbor brought me this jasmine plant to cheer me up.

She is such a gem. I don't see how people make it through life without good friends.

Finn has been playing dress up lately.

Do you think this Rapunzel dress makes her look fat?

Been getting lots of snuggles lately, too.

Had Open House recently. Jackie was all too proud to show off his classroom and playground.

Carter? Less enthused. In all fairness, he had a slight fever. Poor guy. Didn't stop him from begging me to play soccer, of course. To which, I declined.

Bow ties are the newest trend. Did you know?

Aunt Caroline sent Jack 15 of these beauties.

In 3 days, he's managed to wear each of them.

To school.

He's sharing them, too.

Carter even wore one to school. In jest, of course, but he did it.

All day.

Today, he (Carter) wore one again and brought one for his best friend to wear.

Take notes, people! It's catching on!

Lots ahead:

*Beach day with McNamaras tomorrow.

*Bigfoot party is coming together nicely......next weekend is the big day!

*Planting seeds with the little ones.

*Ballet and tap practice - recital isn't far away!

*Summer activities need to be scheduled: soccer for Jack and surf camp for Carter.

Too Much?

Jack's 6th birthday is right around the corner and I've pretty much sacrificed laundry, house cleaning, hygiene and meals to prepare for it. Don't judge. These parties are winding down. Carter is too cool for big celebrations and prefers a simple soccer game, In-N-Out and a sleepover. Easy peasy. My days of color coordinated plates and party favors are treasured right now.

Bigfoot is the theme. I've gathered a ridiculous amount of Bigfoot material (who knew?), including labels for their "Bigfoot Hunting Water" that they'll take into the back yard for a hunt. They'll find tracks and other fun stuff while en route.

Here's where I might have de-railed:

I've searched for and located a Bigfoot (read: gorilla) suit. I would like to have Carter make a quick run by beyond our iron fence as the kids are searching. In the costume. A true "Bigfoot sighting".

Cool, yes?

Blake thinks I've lost it. He thinks we'll have the police at our door, neighbors calling TV shows and kids screaming bloody murder. We'll have a range of children.....so yes, the 2 year olds must be taken into consideration.

Gratitude

One of the perks of moving across the country is the opportunity to meet all sorts of friends. We have made very special connections in every place we've lived......with friends and family.......and cherish the time spent with so many important people in our lives.

With that happiness comes the difficult part of saying goodbye. It's usually us moving and saying goodbye.....but in this case, the McNamaras are off to Sacramento in a few weeks. We've done everything we can by begging them to stay......even offering the gazebo for shelter!

(I kid. Unless they'd do it.)

They have family in the area, so I know they'll visit. And, we plan to do the same. But, it's the day-to-day contact that I'll miss the most. Car pooling, ballet, sneaking kids into Legoland, birthday partes, Disneyland, family visits and more.

Even Costco trips with 5 kids. I'll miss that, too, Allison!

I'm drawing on my history with Jillian for strength......we've become even closer, oddly enough, with the miles put between us. I know the same will be for Allison and me.

She brought me this book recently. Tears were flowing. We all laughed as we read through it. Thought I would share:

Easter Recap

Easter summary. I'll keep my copy brief and to the point. I know how brutal holiday summaries can be.

First, please behold perhaps the only image ever in the history of history that all 3 Starnes children are looking at the camera and smiling. It's at the printer now, slated for a 16"x20" canvas, dipped in gold and then hung above the fireplace. Year round.

Egg dying with the McNamaras. Slated to move away in just weeks. I'm heartbroken. More on that later.

These girlies are crazy as ever.

Jack got fancy for the festivities.

We relaxed on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

Bought Jack and Lainey these cute watering cans from Target. Putting them to work to help maintain the landscaping. Between them and our gardener, the plants are looking fabulous!

Welcome back, Cold Lamby! The one on the left was lost for a while. She's original, from many years ago, given to Jack as a baby gift from my cousin, Angie. Laine took it over and has been in love ever since. The one on the right is probably our 10th generation......I buy them from Ebay used (we don't like the bright white ones, obviously).......and then drag them around my car for a month prior to handing them over.

I have walked the entire land of Disney and many cities looking for these ~~damn~~ precious lovies.

They (or one) will be attending LSU with Lainey.

Went to Kansas City recently and took this pic from the air for Jack. Still a train lover.

While there, I hung out with these cute girls.

We did a lot of laying around. Jillian was recovering from surgery. I just went to keep her company.

While there, I met up with my first baby, Katie. The "little girl" I babysat as a kid. Sass's sister. Now, she has babies of her own.

And, I'm officially old.

Back at Jillian's, a few of my KC girls came to breakfast.

I miss Kansas so much. Such a fantastic place to live. Love the wide open spaces, the gorgeous trees and the people. The people are what make the Midwest so amazing.

And, finally......the biggest news of all.

My big brother got engaged 2 days ago!

They are a perfect match and I couldn't be happier. Yay for a new Sister-in-Law!

Off to clean up before we help with Kindergarten today. So fun to see Jackie in the classroom.

Oh, and his new fascination is sweaters. Still loves ties, but wants "fancier" shoes and wears a sweater every day.

The City Experience

I wasn't sure how this trip would go. City bound, no car, and very few plans. I typically have a full itinerary upon launching into any adventure, but I purposely didn't for this one. I really wanted us to just wander and find what we wanted to do.

So, we did!

Arrived early Thursday morning via Blake because he was going in town for work. Jack was furious that we were not taking the train, but 1) I didn't want to leave my car at the train station for 3 days and 2) this saved us money.

We dropped our bags at the hotel and set off on foot to the water.

We spread a blanket out on the grass near the bay and watched the ships go by as we ate breakfast. Brought breakfast from home......more on that later......I kept track of expenses just to annoy Impulsive Addict, who thinks we go on vacation every other weekend.

Walked Seaport Village and rode the Carousel.

I remembered, from our 2006 trip, a little coffee shop that had a Red Bull smoothie in this area. I've made them at home before, but can't master how they do it. It was divine.

Played at the Children's Museum playground.

City Slickers.

Back at the hotel, we ate lunch.

Lunchables. Totally nutritious? No. Affordable for travel? Yes.

Don't judge.

Jack was super proud to show me that he could read the word "Like".

Took a long nap and then ventured to Horton Plaza for some shopping and dinner.

Aunt Caroline sent the kids $20 for Easter to spend on souvenirs. They spent it.

Friday morning took us to the Transportation Center to figure out how to get where we wanted to go.

Almost ended up in Mexico. Don't worry about it.

First Trolley ride! Very exciting.

City life with no stroller is tough work.

After a Trolley to Old Town and then a Bus to Mission Beach, we made it to our destination.

Belmont Park at Mission Beach. Super cute and tons of fun.

At lunch at the Wave House.

Watched the surfers doing simulated surfing while we ate.

This area is really cool. Sand under your toes, steps from the actual beach and plenty for the kids to do while/after you eat.

Kids got massive snow cones. Massive.

Kids loved the hammocks.

Lainey loved the chili fries.

We walked to the beach......just beyond Belmont Park.........and (shocker), Jack joined another family for some kite flying fun. They left shortly after.

Carter waited patiently to see if he would be invited into the big boy's football game. He does this often and usually gets recruited. Not this time, though. Sweet kid.

Feels like Coney Island with the amusement park steps from the beach.

I simply can't figure out why our kids are always covered in sand.

Blake arrived prior to sunset and we headed back to the park to ride.

I love Mission Beach. Can't believe we haven't been there before. See? This is why being a tourist in your own town pays off.

The "baycation fairy" brought Lainey Dora press on nails. She is obsessed with them.

We checked out of the hotel and set off in search of the train. Even though Blake was with us and could have taken us home, we promised the kids a train ride.

Stayed at The Bristol in downtown San Diego on 1st Avenue & C.

It was lovely.

Blake dropped us off at the train station and we boarded the Coaster to Oceanside.

So, we accomplished it all: walking, trolley, bus and train. Success!

Train stations are so cool!

Double decker, baby! You know we sat upstairs.

The views were unbelievable. Seriously.

From the Coaster, we boarded the Sprinter, which took us inland, almost walking distance to our house. So cool.

We will absolutely be taking the train again. More often than we had ever considered before. Under 6 kids ride for free. So, it cost me $11 for the 4 of us to travel from San Diego to Oceanside. No parking at the hotel and no gas $$. Awesome money saver.

Blake picked us up a the train station and now we're home watching KU basketball. It's been a great weekend!

Ok, so here is the breakdown of our budget. I logged each day of expenses upon returning to the hotel room at night.

Not bad for a 3 day/2 night stay. Most people would spend $200 on two meals. Proud of us for making sacrifices to ensure this trip was possible.

Lots of people ask how we take as many trips as we do. As you can see, we typically travel on a very tight budget. We also use lots of hotel points and almost never pay for lodging. Blake travels a ton, so that opens up lots of perks in this regard. Finally, we make daily sacrifices to make sure that travel is possible for us. It's our passion. We do without dinners out and other luxuries that most people deem as every day expenses. Those things add up. And, if we go without them, our incomes allow us to travel - both near and far - as we love to do. It's all about what's most important to you. And, travel is our preference!

Don't Call It A Staycation

It's Spring Break here in California!

We've been lazy all week. Like, sleep late (7am), take naps and veg around the house lazy.

All of that ends this evening.

We're packed and ready to hit the town.

Which town? San Diego.

We'll spend 3 days and 2 nights downtown, exploring the city and being a tourist.

We'll travel by train......our first time.......and take in the scenery along the Pacific Ocean.

The trolley and bus systems will take us to and from our destinations. No cars! We're very urban.

We're staying near the Gaslamp Quarter in a tiny boutique hotel that I'll share with you after. Trying to keep the paparazzi at bay for now.

We might ferry over to Coronado Island, to enjoy the boat tour and the island as well.

We might (don't tell the kids) visit Belmont Park at Mission Beach. Never been. Looks like good old fashioned fun.

I'm excited to see the city at night.

Julie S. might join us. I don't know if she's ready for this crew, but she's going to try. Last time she came over, she ended up in the E.R. True story.

We haven't had one in forever. Let's start off with a doozy!

What are we allowed to judge?

Meaning, as parents, what is OK to judge?

This article apologizes for all of those judgments made pre-parenthood. I agree with it. I made all sorts of statements prior to having children that I regret now.

But........

I will judge you if you don't use a car seat/booster when and for the duration it's necessary and required. I won't apologize for that.

What - in your opinion - is inexcusable?

Car seats, eating habits, sleep patterns, behavior, sibling rivalry, education, etc?

Britney and Kids Part 4 - The Finale!

We're almost there, folks.

We finished Thursday evening at the Hotel Del Coronado.

I don't care how many times we visit.....just like tourists.....I so love it there. One of the best beaches in southern California, yummy food and beautiful views.

We could barely see them!

Kidding.

We kept track. Promise.

Sassy girls.

Boys went clamming and found all sorts of critters.

Friday arrived. Kids not in school kept busy. I think we could have left them in the back yard with access to the fridge and they wouldn't have missed us a bit. Lots to see and do.

I love this kid more each time I see her, even when I don't think it's possible. She's a true original.

After school, we had another beach visit and then off to dinner at Ruby's.

Big boys did a little surfing, but it was quite chilly, even with suits on.

Saturday morning arrived way too soon. Britney and kids packed up and headed back home. We miss them already! But, we'll soon be together again at the beach in Florida. This time, at Water Sound, adjacent to Seaside. Still in the Destin area.

Leaving in a few hours for Kansas City. Lots to catch up on, including a post with my big brother, Chris, while he visited a few weeks ago. So fun having him here! More to come.

Britney and Kids Part 3

The fun continues!

Wednesday included a day at the beach after school. Brit's kids are used to Florida beaches.......and Florida heat with luke warm water and the motivation to get in. Not the case here!

They toughed it out, anyway.

Off they go.

Smart girls stayed behind and played in the sand with cover ups on.

None of us are quite sure what's going on here.

Have I mentioned how happy it makes me to see our kids so close with their cousins?

Memories to last a life time.

Dinner at the Harbor followed. I love that we can drive 10 minutes to a fun place like this.....and then share it with family and friends!

Blake is busier than ever with tax season, but was able to join us for dinner.

Thursday brought us to fabulous La Jolla. No visit to San Diego is complete without it.

Love these guys. There are 38 pups currently in this area. Babies everywhere!

We mentioned that we might get a cupcake at some point that morning and HAD TO follow through.

Note to Maci's future husband: Don't say it if you don't mean it.

Britney and Kids Visit Part 2

Disneyland was a ton of fun, as expected!

We started with princess makeovers at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. It's such a fun experience. For the little girls and us!

We treated Maci Kaye to her makeover for her upcoming birthday (in July). She loved it!

I absolutely love Maci's choice.......the punk rock princess!

Couldn't pass up the professional pictures. Such a cute setting!

Jack wasn't totally into it this time. Oh, well.

The girls met more princesses and characters than we ever had before. It was so fun seeing their faces light up as they had their autograph books signed.

Trysten found a new favorite food.......one of Carter's favorites......clam chowder!

Little ones danced as the band played at the French Market.

Not a whole lot to say about this one........the girls are a bit nutty.

And, super sweet, too.

Haunted Mansion! Maci Kaye was a bit shocked by it.

Parade time. Which includes special Disney treats.

Lainey showed Maci how to gather other princesses to run and dance pre-parade. They had no reservations about putting on their own show.

We did it! 2 days, a night with 5 kids in the hotel, swimming at the pool, and 2 visits to the parks.

Just Some Stuff

Lots on my mind lately.

Bear with me.

1. I don't like Girl Scout cookies. That doesn't mean I don't like Girl Scouts or children in general. I typically buy them for the troops each year, so I still feel like I'm not a heathen. I also try to buy from different resources so that everyone can benefit from my guilty conscience.

2. I volunteer at the boys' school each week. Upon walking out recently, I found a lady in the criss-cross-applesauce position (Indian style to those not easily offended), doing yoga and chanting. After a few moments of thought, it finally dawned on me. I like California because we're less of a spectacle here. If she can get away with THAT, perhaps we're less of a shock.

3. I saw The Artist last night. Fantastic. Blake had no idea why I would pay $20 to see a silent movie in black & white. I didn't even try to explain.

4. The Hunger Games premier is going to be a total freak show. I won't see it for a while after its release.

5. We Need To Talk About Kevin is the most riveting and disturbing book I've read in years. Have I said this before? Still haunted by it. Thank God it's a novel and not non-fiction.

6. I'm currently on hold with the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Disneyland booking Lainey and Maci Kaye's princess makeovers for next week. I'm not sure who is most excited about this......the girls or Britney and me.

7. Off the phone now after making the girls' appointments. The cast member (don't call them employees) told me to have a 'magical day'.

Totally stealing that.

8. Am I the only one who thinks Anthropologie has completely lost it?

$1400 for this? I could find the same for $12 at my local thrift store.

9. I don't understand the fascination people have with mustaches.

Please explain.

I swept out from under Lainey's bed today.

This is what I found.

Where is her mother and why doesn't she control her hoarding habits?

Solved our candle problem (rain) with jars and sand.

Mini lanterns. Cute.

Remember about a year ago when I said we were shopping for outdoor furniture?

Well, we got it. Finally. And, it was worth the wait.

I shall sleep outside moving forward.

I wasn't even looking at this set.

Then, Home Depot posted a President's Day Sale. Couldn't pass it up. Helluva deal. It's Thomasville Eucalyptus wood and should weather well with the sun and elements.

Rain beads up and slides right off. For now.

It's fabulous.

Next step? Cable dude. We're almost there!

Painted our wicker set and moved it to the gazebo.

We now have seating for a party of 38......to fit your intimate wedding or bar mitzvah.

We have problems, people. We don't know how to do things normally.

The best part? Our whole yard smells like jasmine. It trails over from our neighbor and leaves this beautiful, fragrant cloud of bliss.

I love it.

Speaking of not normal.

Cut the shaggy dogs' hair. Including about 3-4 inches off of Lainey's.

Oh, and he got that cut on his nose while skiing. Well, technically, he fell down at the snack bar and scraped it on the counter, but I told him to tell everyone he did it "while skiing".

It's true, kind of.

Ski Trip - Bear Creek and Snow Summit

Seriously fun weekend.

The drive in......oh, how I miss the mountains. Our area of San Diego is hilly and beautiful, but there is nothing like the true mountain regions.

Got started at Snow Summit. Totally unfamiliar with these resorts......lots to learn!

Laine put on makeup while the boys skied.

She's very much into the party pics these days. "Hold da camera out and take our picture."

Our children need haircuts so badly.

Seriously. Jack is Harry right now.

Here's the breakdown of skiers in this house:

Blake - awesome

Casey - can get down the mountain

Carter - totally cool snowboarder

Jack - very serious and really interested in learning more

Lainey - total flake

We're all very serious about the stickers, though, for helmets.

Do you hear that?

Nothing. Silence. She finally stopped whining.

Big Bear on Sunday........it was a bright, sunny morning!

Punkin Jack BEGGED for poles........cool skiers use poles......Blake finally caved.

Ski lifts make me nervous. Especially when they're carrying my kids. But, there is only one way up the mountain!

Little Laine. Our giggly, squirmy skier.

The "Wee Ski" is a harness system that allows the kids to ski ahead and you stay in control.

Jack and Lainey have both learned to ski with these. They're awesome.

Except that because Lainey is such a goofball on the slopes, she doesn't mind falling one bit and actually laughs when Blake pulls her up like a marionette puppet.

She falls a lot.

Love. This. Kid.

Big Bear Mountain seemed to have more personality than Snow Summit.

And, we learned a lot about California skiing.

1. They don't take it very seriously out here.

2. Locals don't care for clothes much while skiing. It was 70 degrees, so I can almost understand this.

Didn't see anyone in bikinis, but lots of tank tops and shirtless guys.

Even the employees skimped on clothing:

Busted.

I bought this cute hat for myself and proudly came in with it. Upon doing so, Blake informed me that this is an Alabama hat........fans wear it to mimic the coach.

Damn. So, I gave it to Laine.

I love when he carries the kids like this.

Except, at one point on the mountain, Laine had fallen and he picked her up. Perhaps too quickly because she threw up just after.

Awesome.

After waiting with the punks at the bottom of the mountain, I finally made it up with Carter.

Look closely and you can see some big foot tracks back there. We're on the hunt. Kids are recently obsessed. Thanks Judy Moody Bummer Summer movie.

So cool. Love that Carter is so good. He did some runs on his own and seemed super comfortable with everything.

Beautiful.

Such a fun trip.

This week, we prepare for our basketball team party, hosted at our house, on Saturday.
