Southern California Travel Report: San Diego Wild Animal Park

This park is pretty cool and is associated with the San Diego Zoo.  Our passes for the zoo get us in with free admission, however, you must pay to park.  $7 for members, $10 for non-members.

It was hot that day.  Like 86 degrees hot.  We almost died.

Living by the coast, it rarely gets above 70.  This park is further inland and HOT.

It has several zoo type exhibits and shows, too.

Grab a map and start walking!

The main attraction is the safari tram.  Drive out into the brush and see the animals.

Here's a tip.

This is what the line looked like when we got in it at 3:30pm.  We waited for about 30 minutes. Not much fun with 3 kids.

This is what the line looked like when we got off the tram around 5pm.  Zero wait time.

Wait until late in the day to ride.

The ride itself is very cool.  We saw a ton of animals, including giraffes, hippos, antelope and about 50 varieties of deer type things that I don't know the name of.

At 5pm, they do a Cheetah Run.  Pretty impressive.  Fastest animal in the world.

Overall, it was a pretty cool place.  The kids had been twice before.  Once with Blake and once with a sitter.  They loved it.

This is how I felt after being in the heat for 5 hours, however:

Pleasant, no?

I love it there but won't go in the heat of summer. We try to hit the tram first thing to beat the crowds. I have stood in that line for over an hour before though...in the heat! I love all your pics. Great captures.

I went to that park about 10-years ago with my Mom.
Much more spread out. I remember riding the tram and not seeing any animals b/c it was too late in the day ;(

If we ever get to southern Cal we will have to give it a try. You would be dying in the heat here in the Midwest. The temp here has been between 90-100+ for weeks with no rain at all. Be glad you moved to a better climate.
