Question Of The Week - Eat, Live, Be for a Better 2011 - Week 2

Hello, friends!

How did yall do last week?

I did pretty well.....lost 2 pounds.....but am not completely confident in my scale. Seriously. Carter had a 7 pound weight fluctuation. And, mine has been inconsistent. But, who wants to be that girl, a week after New Year's, returning a scale to the store?

"Really, sir. I promise it's not me. It's the scale."

I dug my old one out of the trash and compared. So far, it seems to be accurate. Maybe the new one just needed some time to warm up.

So, this week's topic: Support. And, where it comes from.

I bought this DVD and am anxiously awaiting our initial encounter. I moved all of our living room furniture against the walls, swept our floors and prepared the children for an afternoon (or 20 minutes) of exercise......and then realized that our DVD player isn't hooked up since attaining the fancy TV. Damn. We all had our sweat bands and leg warmers on and then NOTHING.

Instead, I went outside and played basketball with Carter. I'm pretty good, peeps. And, I won. Which is even more satisfying than completing the DVD workout.

Back to the subject at hand: Support. Where do I find it?

Well, the DVD is failing me. Or, Blake is. Or, I am. Because I refuse to even look at the wires needed to connect this bad boy TV to our DVD player. All in good time.

I've really relied on myself this week to stay on task. Blake has been traveling and I'm at home with kids most of the time. I ate healthy for the most part. And, I feel good.

I tried an online counter of calories and food intake. That lasted a day. I don't want to sink any money into Weight Watchers or a gym membership because both are out of our budget.

So......I ask you.

***Where do you find support? Any online tools I need to know about? Anyone interested in standing over me, night and day, for the next 6 months encouraging me to work out and eat less Sonic?

Let me know!

I have an app on my ipod touch that is called Lose it. I think it was like 1.99. And it is pretty smart... it is basically a calorie counter. You set it up with how much you want to lose, how much per week, your height and age and also a deadline. And then it spits out how much you can eat per day, calorie wise. It is preloaded with foods and you can add your own too. And, if you exercise, it will add those calories back in for you to eat, if you want. I like it... keeps me on track.
Oh, and I noticed you are reading The Hunger Games. I love that series... maybe as much as Twilight. Love. I hope you enjoy it!

I'm with Vintage Junky...do you have an iphone? I have an app called My Fitness Pal and it was free. Awesome food database and counts my calories and exercise. It's amazing and keeps me on track! And since I always have my phone, I just plug away. It's also fun to find 1 friend to be accountable. I have a running buddy that keeps me in check. We rely on each other and I know she will be at the end of my driveway when it's 30 degrees waiting on me to run. Having someone even to chat with about doing the same DVD or something would still be helpful for me.

I ran 3 times. I don't weight myself but use my clothes to kind of evaluate where I'm at and things started to feel better after last week.

Support? Hmmm. When running, it's helpful to find other people who run and share successes or failures. Weight Watchers members get support amongst themselves. I think posting regularly like this means you'll get support from blog friends.

I ran once, Pilates twice. Drank no wine and even had a freaking APPLE for my dessert. I have not weighed myself because I know I did not lose any weight.

My support is lame and I don't have an iphone. Probably why I yo-yo so much. I just remember back to how skinny I was in college (not freshman year) and before my wedding to keep my self motivated. It helps a little when I'm considering having just ONE more plate of triscuits and cheese.

2lbs is GREAT!!! Congrats. That should help motivate you.

I'm with Kelly. I can TELL where I am in my weight just by how I feel and how my clothes fit.
I walk..walk..walk. Since the new year I've started doing lunges, situps, crunches and plankes..
Good luck and 2lb is GREAT!

2lbs is awesome Casey. I bought that dvd this weekend too but haven't tried it yet. I think I am going to wait until after my race next weekend. A lot of people swear by a food and exercise journal - write down everything you eat and all the exercise you do ... it helps keep you accountable. I didn't lose this week ... but today is a new day ...

Two pounds is awesome for one week!!! You can't expect results like they have on the Biggest Loser because all they do all day is work out and as a Mom running a family that just isn't possible. Hang in there because I will cheer you on. When I first started losing weight I did the Slim in 6 video by Debbie Siebers and it helped me lose inches, pounds and tone. But I have heard that the 30 day shred works great too. You can do this!

Blackberry! Blackberry! No Iphone. I'm not smart enough to use a touch screen.

Another reason to make the switch to the evil iPhone, Case. Just do it already. :)

When I'm trying to lose weight, I usually partner up with someone to hold me accountable. Usually my cousin or another friend that will work out with me and make me go. Coco was pretty good at it too, but then I went and got myself knocked up.

you would totally be that girl. and if i worked behind the counter at the scale store and you returned it, i would make fun of you when you left. for sure.

my support comes from the husband--he's good with whatever changes i want to make in meals and making watching kids so i can work out.

i was supposed to start the shred again today but it snowed so everyone is home from school work and i'm eating doughnuts and watching tv instead.

When I've lost weight in the past I used calorie counter which is not super fun, but this time around I'm trying to be more intuitive about it, making sure that my plate is mostly veggies, some whole grains, and some lean protein. When I want a snack, I reach for a fruit or vegetable because no one's ever gotten fat from eating too many apples, right? Love that you played basketball with your kid instead of doing the DVD. Way more fun.

For me, support is mostly about having people to share in my wins and fails. So, I find that on the internet (I love SparkPeople.com), with my friends and now with our little community.

As for your two pounds, that's awesome. Congratulations!

It brings me huge amounts of joy when commenters bring up getting Netflix and an iPhone. It's not just me anymore - everybody knows those things rock. You'll give in, Case. BBs are olllld school. :)

Yay at least u bought the dvd!!! Ha! I wanted to start doing the dvd again today and what do u know our blu-ray remote is missing and u can't play the dvd without it. UGH! I'm also trying "the 3 Day Diet". I used it before and it worked and it's super easy. I can normally keep the weight off too, just as long as I have no more babies!!! Good Luck, 2lbs is great!!!

i encourage myself (when no one else will) by looking at old pics and seeing how healthy i looked. or maybe reading something encouraging that someone overcame something and think if they did that then i can at least do the shred. or read about the unhealthiness of sonic and realize the crap your eating. and how gross it feels in your body even if it tastes so good!

Great start! I can't wait to hear what you think of the DVD. I work at a YMCA so I have no excuse but I rarely workout at work. We did start a weightloss challenge and that has been a good jumpstart I just hope I can keep going. Maintaining once its lost is my biggest thing.

Keep it up!

I use My Fitness Pal too on my iPhone and it has really helped! I started to lose my weight once I started using it! Working out at the gym 6 weeks didn't do it for me, but this app did! You really do need an iPhone, girlfriend!!

I am like you and have to lean on myself for support. Brian has been trying to lose weight too so that has been helpful. He has been using the same app. He has lost over 20 lbs. in the last month and a half!! You can call me anytime if you need some one to vent too about how hard it is. That is always helpful for me :)! Good luck. 2 lbs. in a week is awesome!!!!

I downloaded the Shred from iTunes and I just do it on my computer. Now that we have the fancy computer and TV combo, so we can hook it up and I can do it on the big screen. I don't think I've bought a DVD in years!

I posted about my support, and some of it comes from my husband hooking it up for me. ;)

I use my workout DVD's on my laptop. Dave is almost always watching tv in the living where the only dvd player lives. The best motivation for me is classes at the gym. When working out at home it is easy to give up. But if other people are watching you tend to work that much harder. But I do love the Jillian dvd's. I am using her 6 week 6 pack now.

Two pounds and trumping your son in basketball sounds like a pretty perfect week to me!

First off you have a gorgeous family! Two pounds and beating Carter in a game of hoops ... week 1 of 2011 score!

you are cracking me up.
sparkpeople.com is a good online tool....similar concept to weightwatchers as far as tracking your calories and such.
I personally find it too much of a hassle
I have been sick and with sick child so we have not worked out. and we had fast food for lunch today. whoops!
glad someone is doing well
2 pounds-you rock

My Fitness Pal app on iPhone helps with calorie calcs.

Good grief, I hear you on this. I am terrible at being consistent. I have pondered the calorie counter, but just yesterday I went to Starbucks and ordered a green tea latte (don't even want to know how many calories) and a red velvet cupcake. Said cupcake had FOURHUNDREDTHIRTY calories in it. Told me so right there in the fancy pastry case, and yet I still ordered the damned thing. And then when I devoured it in the car, I remembered that I had just read an article about some beyotch star (I've forgotten which one) who was using a meal delivery service that made sure she only ate 1100 calories a day. 1100-430-green tea-latte-minus-minus-minus. Uh, I ran out of calories at the latte. I've decided calorie counting sucks.
