Question Of The Week - Luv Songs

That's right. We're talking about romance.

Skating rink, school social, hand holding romance.

This might surprise you, but I wasn't always as smooth as I am today. In fact, as a tween and teen, I was downright obsessed with music. When I bought my first record, TNT, by Tanya Tucker, I fell hard. I loved the scandalous cover and the grown up feel to it all. Later, I'd go on to buying other records and tapes and listening to them over and over again, recording the words on spiral notebooks.

I could build a mix tape like no other. Sappy love songs? Yes, please! I adored them all. And, I used only the best recording method available - pushing one jambox up against the other, threatening my siblings' lives if they spoke, and hitting record.

***So, since we're nearing Valentine's Day, let's reminisce. What were some of your favorite ballads?

****Ever make a mixed tape?

(Sass, just nod your head and play along.)

To inspire you, I built a small playlist. Mostly old ones, with a couple newer. And, let it be known that long ago, my BFF Monica and I were obsessed with Secret Lovers. Of course, we didn't know what it was about.

Check out this list, also, to spark some memories.

And, after you answer this Question of the Week, head on over to Hines Catch Up and enter Lindsay's giveaway. You won't be sorry!

ahhh, couple skate! I can still hear a good love song on the 80's channel and sing every word. I was not as into music as you were, but a mix tape....oh yeah! If you didn't put one jambox next to the other, you patiently waited until the DJ played your song, blank tape in the deck! Funny how times have changed. Bon Jovi is my secret lover so I adored his songs and anything Journey is just about a love song. Oh, and what about that song from Dirty Dancing(can't think of the name right now).

The Time of my Life! Good one, Jann. I giggle every time I hear the Black Eyed Peas version.

Brings back memories of Thunderbird Roller Rink in Plano...carperted walls and all. Good times!! I actually had a stereo with a tape player and could record all on one device...I was pretty cool, I must say!

I have way too many favorites to name but I will say that a guy called me and played "Just to be the next to be with you" by Nelson (the twins with the long blonde hair) when he found out that the guy I loved and "was going with" dumped me because I wasn't trampy enough for him. Jerk! Anyways, I told the guy it wasn't happenin' and hung up. I was always waiting for the Jenny Jones show or Ricki Lake show to call me and put me on one of those "you were so mean to me, look at me now shows". He would show up and be hawt...and I would regret hanging up on him. Luckily that never happened! :)

I have no doubt you threatened their lives. I was like Jann...totally had to wait until it came on the radio and then press record! haha!
Love me some mix tape action.

There is song by Mr. Big...to be with you..i think?

I loved mix tapes too! My favorite was I don't know much but I know I love you. Aaron Neville and Linda R.

Oh, it was Mr. Big, not Nelson!

Secret Lovers...yes. A classic, and so unappropriate for our parents to let us listen to. Did we have no supervision? Good thing we didn't know what it, or any of the songs in "Grease" were about!

In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel...one of my all time faves. Everyone needs a Lloyd Dobler in their lives....

That would be "inappropriate"....pregnancy brain!

Loved me some mix tapes. Especially the cool see-through ones that were yellow and pink. You were super cool if you had those.

Don't forget REO Speedwagon, Chicago and of course.... Richard Marx - Hold On To The Night.

I just found a box of my "mix tapes" that old boyfriends made for me... One side says "To Jillian" and then Side B says "Love (so and so...)" I remember them having awesome songs on them; however, I am pretty sure that Jesse just donated our only tape player to Goodwill.
I do remember my very first slow dance was to that Robin Hood song... Everything I Do, I Do It For You. I can't hear that song without thinking of Matt Handleman. And my first kiss was to that awesome Boston song...
It was all downhill after that!

Aww... it is so much fun to read all the comments and think back to the 80's. I was a love song junky ... too many that I love to name. I am really bad with song titles too ... but I can sing the song to you (which you wouldn't want!!!). I have a CD that I bought in London while we lived there called Chick Flick Love Songs. Love that one ... has all the good ones on it. Think I'll head over to my itunes and flip it on while I read blogs!

Fave love song...EASY

More than Words by Extreme (it may have ruined their rock band career, but it is AMAZING!)

Mixed tapes..hell ya. All the time.

#1:Nothings going to change my love for you, you ought to know by now how much I love you.
One thing you can be sure of, I'll never ask for more than your love.

#2: Well, your nobody called today, she hung up when I asked her name and I wonder, does she think she's being clever. Clever....ahhhhhh....you say nobody's after you. If that is what you say is true, then I can love you like nobody can.
Even better.
Better...ahhhhh....oh..oh..oh..

#3: Two of hearts, two hearts that beat as one. Two of hearts, I need you, I need you.

#4: Who would of thought that we could become lovers, as friends we were so so tight, can't help myself, you make it feel all right.
I got to, got to tell you, ohhhh baby, I think I love you, from head to toe. I think I love you from head to tooooeeeeeeeee, I knowwwwwww.

I loved to make mix tapes. I was lucky enough to have a stereo with two tape players and record player. So I made all sorts of fabulous mix tapes. And then in college when Napster hit the scene I would make mix cd's with downloaded music. And I would write a story on the cd that listed all the song titles. I was cool like that...

I'm reading this cracking up because I can remember all to well when I use to make mix tapes. I thought it was the coolest thing, putting on the greatest hits onto a tape.

Oh tapes...I miss them a little.

As far as the songs. George Straight and Garth Brooks...studs. The Thunder Rolls by GB use to be a re-winder. Ha-ha

Absolutely!! I used to make mix tapes all the time! I recorded the Top 40 every week. I dumped weeks worth of allowance into tapes...and later CDs.

I love your playlist!

Heading over to check out the giveaway!

Firehouse was always at the top of my love song mix tapes. I had/have a thing for hair bands and slow songs.

Girl...I was a mixed tape QUEEN! I love me some 80's hair band music! I'm surprised that my mom let me listen to some of those songs since they all had lyrics that involved drug use or sex but whatev.

I used to record a song and then write down the lyrics in a notebook like you. I would stop/play about 100 times. My mom would get so irritated with me!

I had a kick ass stereo system in my room when I turned 12. One beating from my dad when I was 16 and it got tore up worse than my ass. I miss that thing. =(

Everyone growing up had mixed tapes of 80's rock songs. I would sit by the radio and wait for the next song to come on and then press record on my boombox.
