Question Of The Week

***In the spirit of Valentine's Day, what "slow" song brings back memories of middle school socials?

I remember dancing with Bryan Life to "Careless Whisper" by George Michael at a Valentine social...I heard that he got into a car accident after he moved to Ohio and got amnesia. Sad that he doesn't remember our special moment :(

Richard Marx, Right Here Waiting.

btw, using the word "social" just aged you about 20 years I think. :)

Tears For Fears: I Know This Much Is True

Still remember the turquoise, taffeta dress I wore that my mother made me. =)

I also remember the guy I danced with, Mark. He blew me off in middle school, but in high school asked me out multiple times only to be TURNED DOWN!! Loser!

Monica - I'm betting remembering your special moment might be further down the list of problems if the poor guy suffers from amnesia! Good Lord!

Shannon - What do they call them now? Seems like they were mixers or grubs in my sorority days. Socials in grade school. Help!

I am laughing at Monica right now. Poor guy.

My song would be Journey's "Open Arms"

or that song, "Nothings going to change my love for you, you ought to know by now how much I love you"
Who sung that?

Coco: Glen Medeiros

Blake said...

COCO IS LYING. I KNOW THAT HER SONG WAS "FRENCH KISSING IN TEH USA"!

Moni said...

I know. I'm awful. He was my first real crush and we were "going together" for about a month which is a lifetime in middle school years. Everytime I hear that song, I think of him and my Guess overalls.

Coco, I can't stop singing that Glen Medeiros song now....thanks :)

COLD NOVEMBER RAIN! so hilarious. well, it was a slow jam until it got to the end at least. and then in 5th and 6th grade, mr. big 'i'm the one who wants to beee with youuu...'

GREAT QUESTION!

we mostly just moshed to nirvana though. and jammed to baby got back.

Socials were lame...Haggard kids rocked Bullwinkle’s every Friday and Saturday night until that kid got stabbed in the parking lot. I was there that night...but I didnt do it. Anyway I remember Young MC's "Bust a Move" being da bomb!

To answer your question, "Slow Dancing" by Johnny Rivers. You know...Slow dancing, swaying to the music. Slow dancing, just me and my girl. Slow dancing, swaying to the ...

Blake, you just made my day...the french kissing in the USA reference was GREAT!! ha!

I remember I went to camp and my boyfriend was Hub Bectal. His step mom was victoria principle (or so I thought). We only dated for a couple of weeks but it was true love...

I hear the song played at the dance every so often and can not for the love of me remember it!

Coco said...

Oh Blake. You know your song was, "I Touch Myself"

How bout some white snake, warrant, tears for fears...love me some oldie songs! I got Monster Ballads off an infomercial and love that CD.

Coco,

No, you didn't.

Clearly, as one of your older family members I am horrified by this question. I believe it was "Lady" and Rob Lewis. (who is probably the same height today as he was in 7th grade)

8th grade is a tie between "hurts so good" and Olivia Newton John's "Make a move on me tonight" not sure of the actual title but either way...neither of these songs were appropriate!

I remember going to Bullwinkles! I had a crush on a Carpenter boy...Matt O'brien. But then Merrilee started kissing on him! We weren't BFF's yet...she's lucky I would even have her as a BFF4E after that stunt! Kissing bandit...

Here's my 1987 middle school slow dance mix:

-Meet Me Half Way, Kenny Loggins

-Here I Go Again, Whitesnake

-(I Just) Died In Your Arms, Cutting Crew

-Don't Disturb This Groove, System

-Is This Love, Survivor

-Ballerina Girl, Lionel Richie

-And the macdaddy of slow songs... Songbird by Kenny Loggins!!!

Now, let's break it down with some Funkytown!

Blake said...

COCO - Yours was definately not "Like a Virgin"! HA!

Coco said...

Oh Blake, Blake, Blake.
You are just jealous that "Like a Virgin" really WAS your theme song until you met Casey.

It's ok. I think it is great that you saved yourself. Even though it wasn't by choice.

Y'all are FUNNY!

My 8th grade V Dance theme was "Tell it to my Heart" by Taylor Dayne. I also remember Kokomo by Beach Boys being popular back then. I did love that Glen Mederios song!

Shannon said...

Casey,
What Fitz said - I called them dances and that's what they seem to still call them.

Blue-Eyed Scallop...Don't Disturb this Groove is one of my all-time favorite 80's songs. Matt O'Brien was yummy...I remember the day he moved to Plano. I can't believe we are discussing Bullwinkle's on here. Dave and I were just talking about it the other day when we heard that Young MC song on the radio...that one was in heavy rotation at that place. We used to go there to see the Haggard boys, Blake :)

Coco- I just spit out my drink at your last comment....HA!

FROGGITY! said...

LOL!

i forgot one. rumpshaker. yeah, it's not slow. but the 7th grade boys thought it was HILARIOUS.

oh, and i also need to mention meatloaf 'anything for love' blech

Hmmm.....November Rain by Guns N Roses.

Hey, I'm four years younger than Casey and we too called them "socials"!

I can see it now...

Geoff Hewett with his light blonde hair spiked in the front (like he walked into a wall), z cavoricci's (tight rolled) and ALWAYS in the center of the circle with me showing off his moves to Bel Biv Devoe... that was my first love!

We never stayed at the "socials" that long, our crew headed over to Mr. Gatti's at Park/Preston until it was time to go home...

Hammer was in then still, Taylor Dayne, Wilson Philips, Sinead O' Conner and almost all of the other songs mentioned already...

Oh, to be young again!

Holy cow--this post certainly sparked some memories for everyone! Carrie--I can't believe you outed me with Matt O'Brian. . . actually I did not kiss him--we were just "slow dancing" as Blake called it. Monica--I TOTALLY had a crush on Brian Life. . . .he had a go-cart and would cruise up and down our alley. . . what a stud!!!!

OK, good stuff. Loved this one!

Michelle - Kokomo.....so true.

Plano girls - need to see a pic of Matt O'Brien. The name is so familiar. Please email me!

And, I think we forgot one...."You're the Inspiration". Chicago, maybe?

Welcome, Yaya!

Oh gosh...so many! Skid Row "I remember you", Poison "Every Rose has it's thorn" to name a few. I have to agree with Shannon..Richard Marx is one I remember really well. Somebody else posted "I just died in your arms tonight" by cutting crew (this one only makes me think of an SNL skit with Will Ferrel and Hiratio Sans-does anyone remember that?). Also I remember "the lady in red" but don't remember the artist.
