The Infirmary

It was a bad day. Lainey threw up many, many times. I changed more sheets and blankets and pj's than I have in the past few months. It is so sad when a baby is sick because they don't understand that it will eventually stop. It just hurts.

So, the vomiting ended yesterday afternoon and since then, I've waited for my next patient to show signs of need. Thus far, we're OK. I sanitized the house and cleaned all that I could. But, to keep a bug confined to Jack or Lainey and not have it pass to the other is pretty much impossible. Without my knowing, they share sippy cups, snacks, toys, trains and more.

While I'm not overly superstitious, I have noticed a few absolutes and am wondering if I should start knocking on wood more often.

Mid-December statement made to a friend, "Oh, we never get sick. Carter hasn't seen a doctor for more than a flu shot or well check in 4 years." While that statement is true and held true through the Christmas bug of '08, the rest of us were sick for more than a week. In fact, I think I started coughing as soon as that sentence was finished. Hmmm.....

Wednesday night statement made to another friend after hearing our little town held a stomach bug epidemic, "Oh, we won't get it. Our immunities are up after being sick for so long during the holidays." Lainey was in the midst of it less than 12 hours later.

So, yes, I'm going to add a few resolutions to my list - knocking on wood, throwing salt over my shoulder, and whatever else I can come up with!

On another note, I must say that after we deal with an illness, I have a renewed since of gratitude for the healthy days. No one with fever, less fussiness, the ability to get out of the house and go on a walk. I'm looking forward to it!
